Hildegard x Chronic Pain
Feb 18, 2025
I am so excited to be working with the wonderful Bound By Theatre Company on their upcoming production of Not Saint Hildegard. This project truly connects my two passion subjects: Voice and Pain! Hildegard of Bingen did so many incredible things in her life (1098-1179), she was head of two Benedictine abbeys in the middle ages, toured around preaching which was forbidden for women at the time becoming counsellor to the pope. She wrote extensively on healing and the body, she also wrote about the female anatomy while male bodies were the basis and blueprint of all medical knowledge at the time and even her understanding of sanitation was centuries ahead. She wrote sacred music still popular today and wrote morality plays. Most famously Hildegard experienced extraordinary visions for which she was made a saint many centuries after her death. She called these visions "the living light".
Alongside her visions, she lived with constant and chronic pain. As voice coach for this production I am helping the performers to embody the breath and voice of pain in an authentic way.
I will be leading a workshop around Chronic Pain x Hildegard in March in London which is free to the community. Come along for a gentle day to explore how pain affects the breath, body and voice and how we can begin to re-connect to our pained bodies using gentle sound, story and breath.
